Julian Celebrates "Gold" Anniversary

Golden anniversaries are traditionally celebrated after 50 years. But Julian's "gold" anniversary this year celebrates 140 years since the town's first inhabitants discovered the precious metal.

2010 is also known as "The Year of the Miner". Activities throughout the year will be centered on this theme.

In addition to gold, the town has become famous for its homegrown apples and superb apple pies. But there is even more that this charming mountain town has to offer!

 Julian has earned its reputation as the Bed & Breakfast capital of Southern California. Couples love its romantic atmosphere and weddings are held here at some of the most picturesque sites in San Diego County.

Julian is also the perfect destination for families, corporate retreats and active individuals such as hikers, horseback riders and bicyclists.

A multitude of delightful stores and specialty shops line streets traveled by horse-drawn carriages.

With shows and festivals celebrating daffodils, wildflowers, quilts, art, music, grapes, gold mining, stargazing and renown apples, Julian offers an abundance of unique activities.

Merchant of the year!
Each year, members of the Julian Merchants Association select a Merchant of the Year who represents the best of the business community.  The Merchant of the Year, who is revealed at the annual JMA picnic in July, receives the key to Julian, a proclamation from the County Board of Supervisors, a year’s free membership in the JMA and is honored again by riding in Julian’s Fourth of July Parade.

Eligible nominees may be business owners or full-time managers within the Julian, Cuyamaca, Wynola and Santa Ysabel

Think Fire Safety
The Julian Fire Department has asked the Merchants for help. Delivery drivers are parking across from each other when delivering on Main Street. This creates a dangerous condition for the fire department when the road narrows to less than 2 lanes wide. Each of us needs to notify other merchants, and especially notify the delivery drivers. The fire department will ask the Sheriff's Department to begin ticketing the drivers if we do not take care of this ourselves. THINK FIRE SAFETY!

Shopping Local

I'm sure all of us shop keepers and business owners want everyone who comes to our town to SHOP LOCAL. One of the best ways we can do this is by being aware of what other shops have for sale. If we all know how to direct shoppers to other stores we are helping each other and helping ourselves. We build a reputation for being friendly, which is good for all of us business owners.

When tourists ask me about particular shops, I like to tell them something special about that shop. For instance, The Birdwatcher has a sale table at the back of the shop. I tell people to go to that table first. Even if they don't find something they want, they have to walk all the way from the back to the front of the shop to get out. This gives the Birdwatcher a better chance of making a sale. Do you know that the jams and jellies at The Warm Hearth all have ingredients that we can pronounce? Do you know the pie shops have lunch specials that include 1/2 sandwich, a small soup or salad, and a slice of pie? If they don't do it year round, it's good to know that too.

I keep brochures for other shops near my cash register. Do you know that The Candy Basket's brochure has an offer for a free piece of candy? Even during the slowest of times for business, it's good to be open regular hours. At my shop, we are open every day except Christmas. When business gets slow, we sometimes open fewer hours each day. However, we still open every day. Posting hours of operation on the shop door helps people know if you will soon be there. A note that says "Be right back" if you have to leave for a few minutes may save a sale. It has for me more than once. We all can find ways to get people to shop local. Being friendly and helpful is the best way.
